         IOWA APPALOOSA ASSOCIATION

On Saturday, November 17, 2007, the Iowa Appaloosa Association (IAA) hosted its Annual Membership Meeting, Awards Banquet, and Stallion Auctions at the Quality Inn & Suites in Ames, IA.  As many of you already know or may have heard there was an incident regarding the improper use of proxy votes.  The Board wants to ensure all members that the matter is being handled and is providing this explanation to dispel any incorrect rumors that may be running rampant.

There is a group of individuals among the IAA membership that have their own personal agenda that is not in the best interest of the Club, the Appaloosa Horse, or how to better the breed.  The incident at the Banquet was the last stand of a group dedicated to the destruction of the IAA because this new club is the end of whatever “power or purpose” they think they may have. These individuals do not care about the Breed or the Club as their interest is self-involved.   Their behavior is an embarrassment to all.

The individual in question attended the Club Banquet on November 17, 2007, and had not previously attended a banquet in three years.  Prior to the banquet, while in Ft Worth at the World Show, “said” individual was busy gathering proxies for voting rights. He solicited anyone that is on the current IAA Membership List including those that only join to participate in the futurities as well as current active members.  His story to these members was that “we don’t want the two Iowa Futurities combined or we want the IAA Club split back into two clubs.” This was the justification he used to obtain the proxy votes.

“Said” individual’s justification to obtain the proxy votes is incorrect, as the IAA has no plans at this time to combine the Futurities or split the club.  As the final step for the merger of the two clubs to be complete, both “old” clubs must change their bank account names and Tax ID Numbers to the IAA name.

This is where the proxy votes were needed. “Said” individual gathered eighteen proxy votes from the Worlds and some from around Iowa, Nebraska, & Kansas and planned to stop this from happening. He also planned to drive the election of officers in his favor so he could split the club. Under the Iowa By-Laws all proxies must be notarized to be legal.  Most of the proxies obtained were signed in one location and notarized in another location on November 15, 2007, in Nebraska two days before the Club’s Banquet.

When “Said” individual was asked about the discrepancy in the date of the notary he became extremely loud and argumentative and accused members of the board of stealing money from the futurities as he tried to bluff his way through the questions. The Board Members then decided to call the individuals whose names were on the proxy votes and found out that most of the proxies were signed in Ft Worth, TX and that none of these individuals were present in Nebraska on November 15, 2007, when they where notarized.  One individual contacted never signed the proxy or knew anything about it but the Club had his proxy in their possession with this individual’s signature.

It became apparent to the Board that “Said” individual’s proxies where illegal.  The IAA Board contested the proxies. The Ames police were called and removed him from the meeting. After he was removed from the meeting the IAA General Membership voted to terminate his membership for life and not allow him to attend any IOWA functions or events of any kind. This was a majority vote with no one voting to oppose the motion.

This type of action is an embarrassment to any Club not just the IAA.  These “type” of people are in all of the Clubs including the Nationals. Until the majority stands up and takes on these “personal agenda groups” the Appaloosa Breed will never be a leader in the Horse Industry. This type of behavior and attitude needs to change in order for our Regional Club and National Club to survive. It will be very hard to get new members or anyone to volunteer to sit on a club board because no one wants to be associated with a club that only argues and fights. Our Club has some great volunteers & members.  We need to continue this trend and work together to make our Club the best in the Country!
